An award for Healthy Homes has been launched by The Pineapples in association with the TCPA (Town and Country Planning Association) and supported by Wates Group. Entries are now open to homes that incorporate healthy living into their design, delivery and engagement.

The Pineapple for Healthy Homes will recognise recently completed housing schemes that promote the health of residents and citizens and will be judged according to the TCPA’s 12 Healthy Homes Principles.

The award forms part of the TCPA’s ongoing Campaign for Healthy Homes, which seeks to improve the quality of new development and calls on government to introduce legally binding legislation to end the creation of unhealthy homes. As part of the campaign, the TCPA has called on the built environment sector to commit to a Healthy Homes Pledge

“Together we inspire better ways of creating the places, communities and business of tomorrow," says Wates Group.

Partnering with pubic and private sector partners for 125 years’, Wates Group has been creating the places, communities and businesses of tomorrow and "are committed to the long-term sustainability of the built environment and to making our industry more inclusive and representative of the communities we work in."

To be eligible for The Pineapple for Healthy Homes, the homes can come in any form, whether part of mixed-use developments, social housing or small development sites, but should be located in the UK. There is no timeline restriction in terms of when the housing completed, however it is recommended that this has been a notable year in the life of the project, and the homes must be inhabited at the time of entering. The project must also be available to be visited by judges during the judging period, if shortlisted.

"We are delighted to launch this category with the TCPA. This is a fresh opportunity for The Pineapples to amplify best practice and raise awareness on the impact of housing quality on health," said Christine Murray, Editor-in-Chief of The Developer and chair of The Pineapples judging.

"The Healthy Homes Principles take into account the impact of the wider place, including access to nature, transport and climate resilience. It’s going to be a coveted prize and I look forward to reviewing the entries and highlighting the best that the built environment has to offer."

The Pineapples celebrate excellence in the design and development of places where people want to live, work and play. The categories aim to cover all phases of development from community engagement to completion. The early bird deadline for entries is 10 October with a final entry deadline of 28 November.
