The Developer has published the latest edition of its uncommonly beautiful magazine featuring a Placetest of Folkestone in Kent
The Developer has sent its latest edition of the magazine to the printers, now available to pre-order. The magazine is known for its inspirational photojournalism and coverage of places undergoing redevelopment in the UK.
This issue is centred on the theme of Seaside and features a Placetest of Folkestone, the Kent town undergoing significant change. Anthropologist Caroline Bennett and photographer John Sturrock visited the town to capture local voices, their impression of its changing fortunes and changing beachfront.
Several features look at strategies for resilience in the face of a rapidly changing coastline – including the £180m Southsea coastal defence scheme, which turns sea defences into a public amenity. The promenade not only protects homes and historical sites, it has also enabled views and public access. The project is one of several inspiring projects covered in the magazine that unlock places and improve public space and amenities while protecting lives and livelihoods from climate change.
The magazine also visits Hove’s new linear park along the seafront which includes padel courts and a skatepark, delves into the exciting work taking place in Sunderland and picks at the tricky issue of managed retreat or realignment – along an increasingly perilous coastline, what is our moral responsibility to locals on the front?
