With 80% of public spaces taken over by boys, how do we create spaces for girls? In this film, young women at a Hackney secondary school reveal what they need from their city
When research revealed that 80% of children over eight using public spaces are boys, White Arkitekter decided to ask girls to help them design a more equitable city. In this film, young women at Mossbourne Academy in Hackney discuss the places they love and participate in a workshop to create their ideal urban space, designed by, and for, girls. “The project revealed their preference for public places with strong character concerning colour and form, places for sitting together face to face, protected from weather and wind, to see without necessarily being seen, a sense of intimacy without being constrictive; and most of all, to be able to leave an imprint on their city.”
Film by Lucia Scerankova & Rui Pignatelli
